VADM Mike Cowan, MC, USN (Ret.)
Dr. Cowan began his Navy career as a General Medical Officer at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina in 1971, and was promoted to flag rank while serving as Commanding Officer at the same hospital 25 years later. Throughout his Naval career, Dr. Cowan held numerous leadership positions, most notably as Deputy Executive Director of TRICARE (2000-01); Chief of Staff to the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Health Affairs) (1999-2000); and Joint Staff Surgeon (1997-99). He was a leading force for numerous initiatives to include the creation of the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS), Defense Policies for “Force Health Protection,” and development of information systems. During Operation Restore Hope in Somalia (1992-93) he served as the Task Force Surgeon. On 10 August 2001, VADM Cowan became the 34th Surgeon General of the Navy and Chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery. He retired from the Navy in 2004 after serving 33 years. Following retirement he was the Senior Vice President for Healthcare Solutions at Oracle, Inc., (2004-05). Dr. Cowan joined Deloitte Consulting LLP in June 2009 upon their acquisition of BearingPoint’s Federal Practice.
Dr. Cowan earned his M.D. from Washington University, St. Louis, and completed residency training at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and Distinguished Professor of Military Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). He attended the National War College as a Senior Research Fellow, and is a Certified Executive of the American College of Physician Executives. In addition to multiple military awards, the American Medical Association recognized him as the Outstanding Federal Health Executive of the Year in 1999.
Deputy Executive Director
CDR John Class, MSC, USN (Ret.)
John Class is a native of Southern California. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Health Systems Administration and Master of Arts Degree in Health Services Management and Business Administration. John is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
He entered the Navy in 1982. His assignments included various Medical Administrative positions at Naval Medical Centers, Naval Hospitals and Clinics. Additional assignments included the Naval Hospital Corps School and Naval Dental Center, Great Lakes Illinois, USS KITTY HAWK (CV-63), and the Naval Medical Research Institute. John also served as Executive Assistant in the Healthcare Operations Division at the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery.
After retiring in 2002, John worked as a Senior Healthcare Analyst at the TRICARE Management Activity supporting TRICARE overseas and various other healthcare programs. In November 2004 he began his healthcare lobbyist career at the Military Officers Association as the Deputy Director, Government Relations for Health Affairs where he followed health care reform legislation and its potential impact on military beneficiaries. He Co-Chaired the Military Coalition Healthcare Committee and was instrumental in drafting and presenting congressional testimony. John moved in to the private sector and worked as Vice President, Communications and Government Relations for Aetna Government Health Plans. John joined the AMSUS staff in 2010.
Diane joined the staff in 1994. As the Executive Assistant she provides direct support to Dr. Cowan, John Class and the Board of Managers. She is the primary point of contact for the corporate members, the AMSUS-SM group, and enjoys the relationships she has formed with them. She also functions as the facility manager and has been around long enough to see new carpet in the building twice. Diane is a former U.S. Marine and enjoys cooking, baking and being outdoors.
In her role as Financial Manager, Diana maintains AMSUS’ fiscal functions, financial documentation, and provides HR support. Her improved financial reporting and skills to maintain the budget while managing staff needs are recognized key accomplishments. Over her many years of attending the Annual Meeting, seeing our attendees in full dress uniform and the presentation of Colors at the Awards Dinner are a source of inspiration.
Director of Meetings
Jeanette Naiman, CMP
Jeanette joined AMSUS in 2012 and brings over 20 years of experience in conference planning and management. Through her broad range of meeting planning and logistics skills, she provides services varying from securing and negotiating hotel services to coordinating the development, production, and distribution of meeting materials and providing onsite support at meetings and conferences. She is responsible for over site of the exhibit hall, registration and housing. Jeanette enjoys running and has completed several half marathons!
Continuing Education Programs Manager
Lori joined AMSUS in 2013 as the Manager of Continuing Education Programs. She is involved with the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of AMSUS educational offerings related to sessions at the Annual Continuing Education Meeting, webinars and CE/CME articles for the Journal of Military Medicine, a webinar or a CE article for the journal. Her tasks include reviewing abstract and manuscript submissions for compliance with ACCME and related continuing medical education criteria. Lori’s background includes adult professional education management and educational instruction. Outside of work, she enjoys riding bicycles and motorcycles, sharing good food, and spending fun times with family and friends. She strives to learn something new every day!
Marketing and Communications Manager
Mel is the Marketing & Communications Manager for AMSUS. She works with the association to develop and execute an interactive marketing strategy to spread word about the organization and educate the public about what AMSUS has to offer. Mel joined the association in March of 2014. She has more than a decade of experience in communications from work in multi-media PR, sports marketing, and member outreach in non-profit. When not at her desk, Mel loves to run a marathon or two, teach fitness classes, travel and cook. She also holds a WSET II certification.
Tonya is the Managing Editor for Military Medicine, AMSUS’ monthly international peer-reviewed scholarly journal. She manages the print and online journal submission and production process. Tonya has a background in customer service and systems management. Tonya has been with AMSUS for nine years and enjoys archery and target shooting.
Susan joined the AMSUS team in 2009, bringing with her over two decades of membership, marketing, graphic design, and association management experience in the military and medical industry. With MWR, she marketed West Point’s Hotel Thayer and opened & designed the logo for Walter Reed’s Malogne House. Susan has worked at associations representing industries including Food & Drug Law, fireworks concrete, and more. At AMSUS, she manages membership needs, services, programs, and the AMSUS store. Susan also recruits members at various meetings and exhibits.
When not happily assisting AMSUS members, Susan can be found hiking in Turkey, visiting a coal mine in Wales, or visiting a fireworks factory in Rio!
Sponsorship and Exhibits Manager
Stacie joined the AMSUS team in March 2014, managing sales for exhibit booth space and sponsorship opportunities at the Annual Meeting. She also oversees and promotes advertising opportunities within AMSUS, most specifically within Military Medicine. Stacie provides customer service and support to exhibitors and advertisers, as well.
Stacie graduated from Salisbury University and brings more than seven years of experience within the event industry to AMSUS. In addition to being an avid Baltimore Ravens fan, she enjoys the beach, running, traveling, and is a music and film enthusiast.
