Major General Jerry Sanders Scholarship Program

Eligibility

TriWest Healthcare Alliance has graciously provided an endowment to fund an annual Scholarship for an AMSUS member or eligible dependant to provide financial assistance in the form of a $1000 award for those who are pursuing a healthcare related career. The scholarship is available to individuals who meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Current AMSUS members, or their dependant children or dependant spouses.
  • High school seniors or graduates who plan to enroll or students already enrolled in a full time undergraduate or graduate course of study at an accredited two or four year college, university, or vocational-technical school for the upcoming academic year.

Application Requirements

Return application along with a copy of an official transcript and a letter of recommendation from each reference detailing their background and relationship to the applicant. The applicant should write an essay no to exceed one typed page explaining how this scholarship will assist the applicant in achieving their career goals. The essay should include information on extracurricular and community activities, as well as descriptions of present or past leadership positions. The essay must reflect the applicant’s demonstrated compassion and commitment to service and include educational goals as they relate to career objectives. As an attachment to the essay, please provide a list of volunteer and community activities including dates of participation. If applicant is applying as a graduating high school senior, also include a letter of acceptance from an accredited two or four year college, university or vocational-technical school.

  • Fully complete and submit the online scholarship application
  • E-mail pdfs of your most recent transcript of grades, reference letters and essay to membership@amsus.org no later than the last business day of June. Make sure to include "Scholarship" and applicant's full name in the subject line.
  • If you prefer, you may mail requested documents to AMSUS, postmarked NLT the last business day of June.

Recipient Selection

Scholarship applicants will be evaluated on the following:

  • The basis of the applicants academic record
  • The applicants demonstrated citizenship as illustrated in leadership and community activities
  • Quality and content of submitted essay reflecting the applicant's demonstrated compassion and commitment to service.
  • Letters of recommendation that address the qualities listed above.
  • Work experience
  • Applicants agree to accept the decision of the scholarship selection committee as final.
  • Recipient must enroll in a healthcare related course of study no later than the Fall following award of scholarship.

Applicants are responsible for gathering and submitting all necessary information. Applications are evaluated solely on the information supplied; therefore, answer all questions as completely as possible. All information received is confidential and reviewed by the volunteer committee.

Scholarship Payments

AMSUS processes all scholarship payments. Payments are made in one installment no later than September 1st made payable to the scholarship recipient. Check payments are mailed to the recipient's home address.
