AMSUS-SM Minutes February 3, 2010 Marriott Bethesda, Bethesda, MD
Mary Summers, Chair
- Called the meeting to order at 8:15 AM.
- Mary thanked Mary Chambers on behalf of the SM for her outstanding role as Chair of AMSUS-SM last year. Mary Chambers expressed her appreciation to so many for their support and praised the organization, as well as AMSUS, for their support and the opportunity to have served.
Marian Benz, Secretary/Treasurer
- Read the Anti-Competitive Statement.
Major General George K. Anderson, MD, MPH, USAF, MC (Ret.), Executive Director, AMSUS
- General Anderson presented Rich Tucker, Baxter, with an award for his commitment to the AMSUS organization and for his continuing support.
Jim Young, Vice Chair
- Introduced LTC Stacia Spridgen, MS, USA, Director of DoD Pharmacoeconomic Center who presented “TMA DoD Pharmacoeconomic Center: A Functional Overview and Program Initiatives”, including comments about the role of the Uniform Formulary, the P&T, and the PEC. She also highlighted the MHS initiatives: Quadruple Aim (Readiness, Population Health, Patient Experience, and Responsible Management of Healthcare Cost); P-MART; and the Fentanyl Automated Profile Review.
Mary Chambers, Past Chair
- Introduced Carol O’Brien, Director of NAC Contracting, who presented on “FSS Reorganization and other NAC Changes,” including, among other things, an overview of her new organization. She reported their changes are to make the organization more functionally based versus product-line based. She did commit to providing their organizational milestones for the FSS process on their website so that all can be informed.
Major General George K. Anderson, MD, MPH, USAF, MC (Ret.), Executive Director, AMSUS
- General Anderson presented an overview of the 2010 AMSUS Awards program. His goal was to seek input and feedback from the audience on the proposed changes.
Doug Remeikis, Veterans Administration Liaison
- Doug introduced Mike Valentino, Director, VA PBM, who presented an update on recent happenings within the VA PBM. He stated, among other things, the 2010 VA National Quality Improvement Initiative focused on PolyPharmacy. He stated there was no other VA PBM National initiative, although there may be VISN level programs. As well, he discussed the “missing chapters” of the VA’s Formulary Management Handbook focusing on facility access by representatives. The chapters are now at the Office of Management and are expected to be available for public comment in the Federal Register around May 2010. He expects no issue with having them formally approved by October 2010.

- Introduced Mr. Roy Dillard, Director ECAT, DSCP, who presented a very comprehensive and graphic overview of the Electronic Catalog (ECAT) for DSCP, how it is used, and how to become an ECAT supplier. He suggested going to their website for more information: www.DMMOnline.com
Lunch
Mary Summers, Chair, opened the afternoon SM meeting at 1:00pm
- There were no changes or additions to the previously posted minutes for November 2009. There was a motion to accept, a second, and the membership voted to accept the November 2009 AMSUS-SM minutes as written.
Marian Benz, Secretary/Treasurer
- Treasurer’s report was read.
- Question arose as to the timing of the payment for the Winter Sports Game. Diane Condrick confirmed invoice will be received the end of February.
Mary Summers, Chair, introduced SM candidate companies:
- Awarepoint – Approved for membership
- Dovél Technologies, Inc. – Approved for membership
- Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Inc. – Approved for membership
Major General George K. Anderson, MD, MPH, USAF, MC (Ret.), Executive Director, AMSUS
- General Anderson reviewed the committee discussion regarding potential changes to the 2010 AMSUS Meeting exhibits. The goal is to increase traffic into the exhibit hall and interaction between the meeting participants and exhibitors.
- The following exhibit hours were proposed:
- Monday, 12:00 – 4:00 pm
- Tuesday, 4:00 – 8:00 pm (in conjunction with the poster presentations)
- Wednesday, 9:00 am – 1:00 pm
- The committee needed to reach out to Peter DeYoe, Federal Practitioner, because the proposed changes would require his reception to move to Monday.
- Additionally, there was discussion about incentives as to rewarding exhibit hall attendance
Doug Remeikis, Veterans Administration Liaison, No update to provide
Charlie Hostettler, Department of Defense Liaison, provided the DoD update:
- Charlie invited Bob Steppling and Jim Young to discuss the recent MHS conference. They discussed, among other things, the strong focus on the Quadruple Aim, and that Ellen Embry confirmed her retirement.
Jim Young provided a Legislative update for Marcus Farbstein, Legislative Liaison:
- It was suggested that all members should monitor the legislative process as things may get added on to the other bills, particularly changes to Medicaid Rebates and the 340-B program.
Bob Steppling
- Reminded the audience that the AMSUS Golf outing was coming up on June 8th and that he needed confirmation of attendees no later than March 15. He needs 72 people confirmed or we will not be able to hold the outing as a tournament.
- He is also determining if there is interest in golf in Phoenix in November at the annual AMSUS meeting

- Wrap-up and asked for other open issues
- It was suggested that, out of professional courtesy, when asking a question we stand and identify ourselves and the company we represent for guest speakers
- AMSUS SM needs representation at the Winter Sports Clinic “Miracles on the Mountainside” – the games are held March 28 – April 2. There will be an awards dinner Saturday night
- There being no further business, there was a motion and a second to adjourn.
