Military Medicine

International Journal of AMSUS

Military Medicine is the Association's official monthly journal. Articles published in the journal are peer-reviewed scientific papers, case reports, and editorials. The journal also publishes letters to the editor and book reviews. It is currently under the leadership of its Editor William H.J. Haffner, M.D. (CAPT, USPHS, Ret.).

The objective of the Journal is to promote awareness of Federal medicine by providing a forum for responsible discussion of common ideas and problems relevant to Federal healthcare. Its mission is: To increase healthcare education by providing scientific and other information to its readers; to facilitate communication; and to offer a prestige publication for members’ writings.

The journal began publication in 1892 as The Military Surgeon. Referenced in Index Medicus and on the MEDLARS system, Military Medicine is a valuable educational and informational resource for AMSUS members.

An ALERT to all Authors & Reviewers From the Editor

As of 01 May 2009 Military Medicine has changed its electronic manuscript submission, peer review, and editorial management system from Rapid Review to Editorial Manager.

We know that many of the Journal's authors and reviewers are already using Editorial Manager with other medical and scientific journals, so this change will be quite seamless for them. We also know that some authors and reviewers have learned to use Rapid Review and will now need to learn to use Editorial Manager. There are several important features of Editorial Manager that should facilitate and enrich this transition.

For authors who are submitting new manuscripts, as of 01 May 2009, please do so as usual through the AMSUS web site for Military Medicine. There you will be automatically directed to the new home page for the Journal in Editorial Manager. An excellent tutorial is prominently shown. The Editorial Board highly recommends that both new and experienced authors use this tutorial to rapidly enhance their proficiency with Editorial Manager.

For authors who are submitting revised manuscripts please continue to use Rapid Review as in the past, but please try to have revisions and rebuttals comments uploaded by the end of May 2009. Decision letters for these manuscripts will be sent by the Editor through Rapid Review through the end of June 2009.

For reviewers of original and revised manuscripts that are in Rapid Review, please upload the recommendations to the authors and to the editor using Rapid Review until the end of May 2009. For original and revised manuscripts that are already in Editorial Manager, please respond with recommendations to the authors and to the editor using Editorial Manager from 01 May forward.

Both experienced and new reviewers should take advantage of the excellent tutorial for reviewers in Editorial Manager. In addition, reviewers will now have virtually immediate "with a click of the mouse" access to a Medline search of the National Library of Medicine's database using the keywords that were provided by the authors.

The Journal's relationship with Rapid Review will end on 30 June 2009.

The Journal's Administrator, Ms. Lira, and I will provide individual guidance and assistance as needed during this transition period. We appreciate everyone's cooperation in achieving what we believe to be a major advance for the Journal and what will provide significant enhancements for both authors and reviewers, alike.

Thank you!

William H.J. Haffner, M.D.
