AMSUS' Board of Directors  is responsible for the overall management and operation of AMSUS. It approves the annual budget and annual audit, monitors and approves the AMSUS investment program, appoints and supervises the Executive Director, and delegates authority as appropriate to the Executive Director.

Edith Peterson Mitchell is a retired Air Force Physician and Uniformed Services University Instructor, who retired from the military in 2008. While serving in the US Air Force Reserve and Missouri Air National Guard and afterward, Dr. Mitchell continued her career in medical education for more than 30 years. In 1995, she was named Clinical Professor of Medicine and Medical Oncology at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, and in 2006, she added the responsibilities of Associate Director for Diversity and Minority Programs at the university. Presently, she continues to hold both positions.
