Abstract:
In this panel discussion, virtual health experts from the Defense Health Agency and Department of Veterans Affairs share evidence-based information, practical perspectives, and useful insights on the current state of virtual health in the Military Health System. Moreover, they discuss how the pandemic response is rapidly opening new opportunities for MHS and VA virtual health to help service members and veterans achieve better care, better health, and lower cost, as well as increased military readiness – now and in the future.
Needs Assessment:
The COVID-19 pandemic is driving massive demand for virtual health capabilities that can deliver excellent care to patients anywhere, anytime. To ensure continuity of care and help save lives, the MHS and VA have rapidly expanded scalable virtual health tools for military patients, veterans, and medical personnel across the services.
As we envision health care post-pandemic, we can’t ignore that COVID-19 has already irrevocably changed care delivery and will keep doing so. We must use the clarity these unprecedented circumstances provide to honestly evaluate our tools and practices, and apply that wisdom to make real, lasting improvements to health care. That is especially important to remember once things return to “the new normal.” Virtual health will be part of that future, to the point that in five years we won’t be saying virtual health or telemedicine, just medicine.
Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Recognize how leveraging virtual health can help beneficiaries and providers improve health care access and outcomes, lower costs, and enhance readiness
- Recognize the current state of MHS virtual health services, challenges to implementing virtual health, and innovative MHS efforts to overcome them
- Identify the crucial partnerships and support for virtual health throughout the MHS, especially for the transition from active duty to veteran status
- Discover MHS virtual health resources that providers and beneficiaries can easily and effectively integrate into clinical care
- Understand how the VA uses telehealth to enhance the accessibility, capacity, quality, and safety of health care
