AMSUS Scholarship Program

An Exclusive Benefit of AMSUS Membership

AMSUS will award up to three $1,000 Maj Gen Jerry Sanders Scholarships in 2025 for students pursuing a healthcare-related career. Only individual AMSUS members, their spouses, children, and grandchildren are eligible.

The AMSUS Scholarship program is funded by an endowment from TRIWEST Healthcare Alliance and honors Maj Gen Jerry Sanders, USAF, MC (Ret), former Vice President of Medical Affairs for TRIWEST Healthcare Alliance. Major General Sanders retired from the Air Force in 1991 as the Deputy Surgeon General. He is a Life member of AMSUS and a former member of the AMSUS Board of Directors.

 

Scholarship Details

Only individual AMSUS members, their spouses, children, and grandchildren are eligible. This program is not open to HPSP students or those outside the United States. This is a one-time award that is non-renewable.

Required Documents

The following materials are due to AMSUS by June 30, 2025, via our Scholarship Application Portal.

Scholarship Eligibility

The following criteria must be met for eligibility: 

  • Applicant must be a current Individual or Life member of AMSUS OR an immediate family member (spouse, child or grandchild) of a current AMSUS member.
  • High school senior or graduate who plans to enroll, or students already enrolled, in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school for the upcoming academic year.
  • Academic careers can include medicine, dentistry, nursing, hospital administration, pharmacy, biomedical sciences, or veterinary medicine.
  • Students on HPSP Scholarship are not eligible.
  • Students selected to attend a military academy are not eligible.
  • This program is only for students and school programs in the United States

Selection Process

Applications will be reviewed, and awardees selected, by a subcommittee of the AMSUS Board of Directors. Applicants agree to accept the decision of the subcommittee as final. Scholarship nominations will be evaluated on the following:

  • Academic record
  • Demonstrated citizenship as illustrated in leadership and community activities
  • Quality and content of the essay reflecting their demonstrated compassion and commitment to service
  • Work experience

How Will Recipients be Notified

Recipients will be notified by email when scholarships are awarded. Announcements will be made on the AMSUS website, via social media, and in the weekly SmartBrief newsletter.  

The scholarship check will be made payable to the applicant and mailed to the address on the application in mid-August. It is requested that the check be deposited as soon as it is received.

Awardees will also receive a complimentary one-year AMSUS membership to begin September 2025. Awardees will be added to the database and sent membership information so they can access and update their information.
