Board of Directors

AMSUS' Board of Directors  is responsible for the overall management and operation of AMSUS. It approves the annual budget and annual audit, monitors and approves the AMSUS investment program, appoints and supervises the Executive Director, and delegates authority as appropriate to the Executive Director.

MG Philip Volpe, MC USA (Ret)

AMSUS Board Chairman, Term Expires: 2021

MG Volpe retired from the United States Army after 30 years of service. His final duty assignment was as the Commanding General at the Army Medical Department Center and School in San Antonio, Texas, where he led and managed education, training and doctrine development for all of Army Medicine. He now teaches at the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, and is a healthcare and leadership consultant, team builder and motivational speaker.

Col Allen Middleton, USAF, MSC (Ret)

AMSUS Board Vice-Chairman, Term Expiring 2023

Allen Middleton’s final military assignment was as the 15th Chief of the US Air Force Medical Service Corps.  Following military retirement, he was a member of the Department of Defense Senior Executive Service and served as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs and as the first Deputy Director of the Defense Health Agency.

CAPT Kathryn M. Beasley, PhD, FACHE, USN (Ret)

AMSUS Board Member, Term Expires: 2021

CAPT Beasley retired from the Naval Service in 2009 after serving 30 years. As a career Navy Nurse Corps officer, she served in a wide variety of staff and senior leadership positions within the Navy and Department of Defense. After 10 years with the Military Officers Association of America overseeing healthcare policy and the military health system portfolio, she now is the Principal at K-Beaz Consulting LLC.

COL Phil L. Samples, PhD, USAF BSC (Ret)

AMSUS Board Member, Term Expires: 2021

Dr. Samples’ final assignment in his 27-year Air Force career was as commander of the 386th Expeditionary Medical Group, located in Southeast Asia. His career spanned 16 separate assignments with a wide range of responsibilities from small hospitals to large medical centers and assignments at major command headquarters and the Pentagon. Dr. Samples retired from Innovation Associates as their Executive Vice President and General Manager and is now the Principal Consultant at Samples Professional Healthcare Consulting.

BG Don Bradshaw, MC, USA (Ret)

AMSUS Board Member, Term Expiring 2022

Don Bradshaw, a retired Army Brigadier General, is a Senior Physician Advisor at Booz Allen Hamilton, is an accomplished physician executive with over 35 years of experience leading complex healthcare organizations, professional teams, and clinical operations.

BG Rich Ursone, MS, USA (Ret)

AMSUS Board Member, Term Expiring 2022

Rich Ursone is a retired Army Brigadier General with nearly thirty-three years of service. He previously worked for Bearing Point and Deloitte Consulting before retiring in 2014. Rich currently serves as an Executive Mentor/Consultant on a part-time basis for the Army Office of the Surgeon General and on various Army Medical Command activities.

Mr. Kenneth Wong

AMSUS Board Member, Term Expiring 2022

Mr. Wong is a principal in NavPac Advisors, LLC, which assists US entities through the complexities of developing strategies and building working relationships in China. On April 19, 2017, Mr. Wong was appointed as a Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army. In this role, Mr. Wong is a liaison between the Office of the Secretary of the Army and the citizens of the United States.

CSM Althea Green, PhD, USA (Ret)

AMSUS Board Member, Term Expiring 2023

Althea Dixon’s final assignment was as Command Sergeant Major of the US Army Medical Command and senior enlisted advisor to the Army Surgeon General.  She currently serves as director of the Enlisted to Medical Degree Preparatory Program, a partnership between the Uniformed Services University and the military.  She also oversees recruitment and outreach operations within the Office of Associate Dean for Recruitment and Admissions at USUHS and its commissioning coordinator.

Lt Gen Mark Ediger, USAF, MC (Ret)

AMSUS Board Member, Term Expiring 2023

Mark Ediger is a retired Air Force Lieutenant General with a 32-year military career, retiring in 2018 as the 22nd Surgeon General. He is a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Aerospace Medicine. Dr. Ediger joined Deloitte in November 2018 as a Specialist Executive and is a certified Deloitte speaker on the Future of Health.

RADM Mike Mittelman, MSC, USN (Ret)

AMSUS Board Member, Term Expiring 2023

Mike Mittelman is a retired Navy Rear-Admiral (Upper Half). His final assignment in his 33-year military career was as the Deputy Surgeon General of the Navy and Deputy Chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery. Mike is a Diplomat of the American Academy of Optometry and a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He is currently the President of Salus University where he has served since 2013.
